John R. Black is an internationally recognized expert witness in police practices, Officer Involved Shootings, and self-defense issues. Dr. Black regularly presents/lectures on framing, complexity, systems thinking, and sensemaking-decision making. He is a certified FS Advanced Force Specialist and Forensic Video Examiner and the Director of IPICD PS CoE for Artificial Intelligence.

His doctoral work focused on how people use visual information when making decisions. He has taken his study of human thinking (A Masters in Homeland Defense with an emphasis on counter-terrorism and a Post-Doctoral Masters in Psychology) and expanded the idea of using a systems thinking approach with other frameworks such as Cynefin exploring the sensemaking space. He is a certified system thinking trainer from the Cabrera Research Lab and an advocate for thinking about one's thinking and inquiry upstream of the decision.

His experience includes 23+ years of policing and 30+ years in Army Special Operations.
